About UsI think sausage gets a bad rap sometimes. It may not be the healthiest meal you can have, but it certainly doesn’t deserve the pretty negative reputation it gets out there in today’s wellness world. Let’s explore some of the good qualities this delicious meat category has to offer even to the most health-conscious of us all.
Protein is necessary for the body. Proteins are made up of a chemical “building block” called “amino acid.” Your body requires those amino acids to build and repair our muscles and bones. But, that’s not all. It’s just like an infomercial, right? “But wait! There’s more!”
To make hormones and enzymes, your body breaks proteins down into those same amino acids. They can also be used as an energy source for you. Proteins are good. They are necessary.
Technically speaking, the body needs 0.36 grams per pound of body weight each day. If math isn’t your forte either, there are even handy calculators online to determine what you should be consuming daily. Sausage, which is almost too general of a term to use due to the varieties possible, averages 9 to 11 grams of protein per serving (which some diet-focused-person determined to be only 2.67 ounces, but who can stop at that?). That’s a good amount of protein per serving, no matter what type of diet you are on.
Another amazing aspect to sausage is the wide variety of meat products they can incorporate. We commonly create great flavor combinations with pork, beef, and chicken. But those aren’t the only limitations.
Because multiple ingredients can be made into sausage, you can also tailor them to any diet plan. If you require low-fat diets, consider chicken-based sausages. Whichever meat you choose, it is nice to have choices.
Two of the key nutrients found in most sausage varieties are Iron and vitamin B-12. Both are necessary for the formation of red blood cells. Vitamin B-12 helps to keep nerves healthy. Sausage doesn’t stop there.
More B vitamins, such as Niacin, are also found in sausage. These nutrients can help you to keep a healthy and glowing skin, not to mention helping a smooth digestive system and top-notch nerve system.
Selenium, a mineral, is also found in tasty sausages. This nutrient helps to keep your immune system strong. It also lowers your risk for heart disease and improves your reproductive organs, as well as thyroid health.
Are you hoping to get through a rough night of drinking? Hangovers often occur because your body is still processing what you “put” into it the night before. Largely, your kidneys are attempting to process the fluids accordingly. Thankfully, sausage is there to save the day thanks to the phosphorus it contains! Phosphorus helps the kidneys function and filter better! Most of the phosphorus in our bodies is actually found in our teeth in bones, so if you you seek to make those stronger? Yep, sausage is there for you!
With all the good, must come some bad, right? I mean the world is all about balancing the scale. The high fat content of some sausages can hinder weight loss and increase your risk for cardiovascular disease. Some experts have also noted correlations of processed meats and a connection to some cancers, as well as diabetes.
If you want my advice, (and I should say here I’m a sausage creator, and not at all a registered dietician or physician), all things in moderation.Sausage is certainly a tasty treat, but it has to be a part of a healthy diet with whole foods, grains, fruits, and vegetables, too. It really is about balance. But, isn’t sausage delicious?!
